Inherited homes: why it's better to decide today than ever
In my work, I meet people every week who find themselves facing a very common situation: they've inherited a house, perhaps from a parent, an uncle, or a relative, and they're not sure what to do with it.
We often say to ourselves, "I'll keep it for now; I'll think about it later." But the reality is that, in most cases, that house sits idle for years, empty, unused, with expenses piling up and its value—if not maintained—risking diminishing.
In the past, "doing nothing" was a relatively neutral choice. Today, however, it's a choice that can be costly.
The market has changed. The rules are changing, too. And there are at least three important reasons why it's best to make a decision now, not a year from now:
Building incentives are changing: if the property needs renovation, moving now can mean saving thousands of euros compared to doing so in the future, when incentives will be more limited or nonexistent.
Demand is still strong, especially for well-located properties, even if they need renovation. We receive inquiries every day from families, investors, and foreign clients interested in properties with potential.
Keeping a house idle has a cost: property tax, condominium fees, maintenance, legal liability, bureaucracy... and all this often without any tangible benefits.
In many cases, a small intervention or smart enhancement would be enough to transform a "idle" home into an income-generating or capitalizing asset. Other times, the right path is to sell it, but doing it the right way: with all the necessary paperwork, an effective presentation, and reaching the right audience.
What I can offer, above all, is a genuine, transparent discussion. A consultation to analyze the property's condition and potential together, and determine the best solution for you and your family.
Sometimes it takes very little to completely change your perspective. And deciding today can truly make a difference tomorrow.
